Fierce in the City 2 Wrap Up

Last night I attended Fierce in the City 2, produced by designer and producer Salwa Owens. This highly anticipated show brought together live music and fashion on an October outdoor Sunday evening.

When I arrived, designers, models and stylists were grouped together in the hustle an bustle of hair and makeup, practicing walks, and getting fitted for the fashions that were heading down the runway. The energy behind the scenes was exciting! I saw many familiar faces from our fashion industry and met many new faces!

While the hustle and bustle of the preparation for the show was happening, I hung out with my friend Dorian Phaero and Jeremy Williard in a quiet room. Jeremy designed Dorian’s outfit for his performance, bringing in that 90’s fresh feel.

7:30, the show began! It’s always lovely when a show starts right on time! One of the things that I loved about this show was the combination of live musical performances paired with a segment of the fashion show. It was a really entertaining element that flowed seamlessly during the show.

Musical performers included Vincent Powell, Season 13 top 20 finalist from American Idol 2013; Season 11 American Idol finalist Devan Blake Jones; Denver violinist Mia Herlinger; pop artist Dorian Phaero and choreographer and dancer Karen Carlson and Suzanne Simone.

Part 1: Andrea Li’s jewelry. Models dressed in white with beautiful pieces designed by Andrea Li. Each piece of jewelry was jaw dropping creating a sense of elegance and romance with each model that walked down the runway.

Part 2: Zofia Wosinska of ÉSTAINE. ÉSTAINE designs unique, luxurious accessories and apparel inspired by the hauntingly beautiful shapes, colors and patterns of the dyes used in diagnosis. Models wore black with pops of color from the beautiful accessories of ÉSTAINE.

Next up was leather and fur designer Andreas Tsagas. This segment added a sizzle of sexy! I fell in love with a few pieces that came down the runway, including the hooded purple sassy number.

Next up Salwa Owens dressed amazing fierce women in our community, not models, real women that are bold and strong and doin’ their thang! It was so much fun to see these women walking the runway. Salwa’s ready-to-wear clothing line is perfect for the woman on the go. From business to out on the town to the gym, Salwa covers all the basis!

From last night’s show.. #SalwaOwens #FierceInTheCity2 showcasing amazing women in our community!

We took a little intermission, just long enough to get warmed up and get a beverage and it was back to the grand finale of the show…. Salwa’s evening gown collection, fit for a queen!

This show was absolutely fantastic! Sticking with the theme of “Fierce” it was absolutely on point with the fierceness that came out in the show… all coming from the brains of Salwa Owens who took her fierce passion for fashion and brought together an amazing group of designers, stylists, and entertainers for a night to remember!

I love this image of Salwa right after the show ended, in her element of success shining, all the while being a loving mother of 3, a designer, a producer, and totally FIERCE!

Live. Love. Lash!!!

Live Love LashAs some of you may know, I’ve been experiencing what it’s like to have eyelash extensions! After having contacts for over 30 years and finally getting contacts, it has been such a fun adventure to be able to play up my eyes. Not to mention that it’s become a way for me to really relax and just be quiet for an extended amount of time.

A couple of months ago, I met the beautiful and fabulous Riann Decker, instructor and manager at Live Love Lash in Cherry Creek North. From the moment that she did my first set of lashes, I fell in love. Not with just the eyelash extensions but with the conversation, relaxation, energy, and the way I feel when I leave.

Where did you grow up?

Denton, Texas.

What made you decide  to move to Colorado ?

Originally I was asked to help out at Live Love Lash during the busy holiday season this past year. I fell in love with the studio, the girls working there, and the state, that I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

HikingWhat are 3 of your favorite things about living in Colorado?

Hard to narrow it down to just 3:

1. The weather (y’all actually have seasons here!)

2. Seeing the mountains daily (I have the best view from my apartment)

3. The endless amount of activities to choose from.

What do you do for self care, to lift yourself up and rejuvenate?

I like to sit in a quiet room, snuggled up to my dogs and reflect on the things I am grateful for, everything I have accomplished and the wonderful people I have in my life. I work out 3 days a week at Tease Pole Studio and take as many bubble baths as I can.

It’s a treat for Denver to have ModCloth In Real Life (#ModClothIRL) right here in our own backyard! There’s about a week left of this beautiful vintage inspired fashion and accessories to be in our community!

I had the chance to pop by and get styled by the amazing stylists. We filled up a dressing room and I tried on the latest in fashion from this iconic boutique. I love to shop and have been to boutiques all over the US and beyond and I have to say, fashions from ModCloth are truly unique and style like theirs, cannot be found anywhere! A true throwback with a modern twist!

A trip with the Urban Angels

We are honored to work with The Urban Angels on their amazing dress drive! We delivered 55 dresses that were handmade by these amazing women! We stopped by to check out The Action Center and all the amazing ways they serve those in need in the Jefferson County area.

It takes at least 80 volunteers daily to run this facility. Places like #Walmart, #WholeFoods, #TraderJoes, and #Sprouts donate to The Action Center so families can get healthy food, clothes, and household items.

Please donate! They are in need of children’s clothing and men’s clothing!

Fashion Denver Fashion Camp

Our next camp takes place on Saturday, May 28th!

On March 19th, we held our fashion camp for fashionistas between the ages of 5-15 and had an action packed day of fun!

Our campers learned about inner beauty and being kind with Denver Style Magazine editor Heather Okimoto. They learned how to introduce themselves and compliment each other in a way that led to new friendships. It was so much fun to see this transpire!

Next Jeremy Willard and I (Brandi Shigley) shared our upcycle designs and our campers went to work, sketching and making their own designs. A beautiful mess of creativity filled up our headquarters at Green Spaces.

Model, pop singer, stylist, and producer Dorian Phaero taught our campers how to walk the runway being confident and fierce.

After they learned the walk, it was off to hair and makeup!

Young fashionistas visit the FDHQ

What a fun morning! Today I had 3 girls between the ages of 6-10 over to our headquarters. These girls go to a school called the Logan School and they get to chose a subject that they are passionate about and explore hands on. These 3 young fashionistas all want to be fashion designers and are well on their way. Even the 6-year old is already sewing!

They asked me wonderful questions…
What does beauty mean to me?
What inspires me style?
How do I produce a fashion show?
What are some things that go wrong when a fashion show happens?
What is my favorite color?

So inquisitive, creative and fun!

Fashion Denver

I shared with them the history of Fashion Denver and how I got my start in the fashion world as a handbag designer at the age of 9. I showed them my paper purse drivers license that later led me to have my own handbag business b.shigley designs that ended up going international within the first year! Wow.. it’s hard to believe that was 17 years ago!

b.shigley

I think it’s so important to share our journey and inspire others. I wish that I would have had somebody to show me the ropes when I was a youngster! I’m grateful for opportunities to share this journey! This is making me so excited for fashion camp in March!

Winter fashion at our HQ in Green Spaces

We’ve had our office housed in Fashion Denver since July and have seen the fashions change over the seasons. Now that we are in the middle of winter, our fashion sense has changed to accomodate the chilly, sometimes snowy, icy weather.

Here are some of the fashions that people were rockin’ today!

20160111_105235

Mande looks ever so stylish in her poofy jacket and the bling on her sweater?! LOVE IT! This is the first time she hasn’t worn her sorels in 2 weeks. “I’ve never in worn Sorels before 2 weeks ago, and now that’s all I seem to wear.”

20160111_104251

I’m wearing my vintage hand-me-down dress, stocking cap and leather gloves with a furry faux-bear jacket that I thrifted at Goodwill for $5.00. These boots aren’t great for this weather though.. I have to walk where there is no ice.
