Artopia 2016 Kickoff Party Recap

Fashion Denver is thrilled to be a promotional partner with Artopia’s Whiteout fashion show! Fashion Denver founder Brandi Shigley will be the emcee of the night’s event as we see 9 Colorado designers on the runway with their interpretation of the Art of Fashion.

Artopia is Westword’s annual event that highlights local art, culture, and fashion, all happening in one spot at City Hall located at 11th and Broadway on Saturday, February 20th.

Last Wednesday, the Fashion Denver team  escaped the hustle/bustle middle of the week madness for the Artopia kickoff party at Ophelia’s!

This sneak peak of what to expect at Artopia gave us a taste of the designers being featured in the White Out Fashion Show. Each designer came to the stage with just 1 outfit on their model, just enough to tempt our tastebuds in fashion. We’ll be counting down the days until we see their full collection for this show!

Featured designers include:

D’Lola Couture
Denver Bespoke
Elyse Rainbolt
Gino Velardi
Leon Designs

New Fashion Denver Intern

KellieMy name is Kellie Mortimer and I am going to be the new Fashion Denver Intern for the Spring of 2014.  I am a Southern California native who moved to Denver four years ago. I am currently a senior at the University of Denver, majoring in Marketing. I studied abroad in Paris, France last fall, where I studied fashion and French. I am hoping to pursue a career in the fashion industry when I graduate in June. I spend my free time skiing, traveling and of course, shopping.

I want to learn all about the fashion industry while interning for Fashion Denver. I am hoping to learn about the local fashion industry here in Denver and use my marketing skills in the fashion world.

GIFTED: Come learn what gives local art value at this unique shopping experience!

December 12th 5pm-9pm
The McNichols Building
144 West Colfax

We are truly proud to be a sponsor of this great event that is very near and dear to our hearts!

This is a unique holiday market and conversation on the topic of ‘true cost’ and ‘true benefit’ of an item. We’ll explore the complex issues that surround both buying local and handmade as well as from global corporations.

(ie: “This scarf is beautiful and you made it but it costs a lot of money and I can get something kind of similar from Target but it might be made from slave labor–ugh.)

The market will feature a curated collection of locally handmade goods that showcase Denver’s best local talent.

The hour long discussion will take place at 6:30pm.

There will be raffle prizes, interactive booths, cold cheeks, hot cocoa, and of course.. warm cookies!

Sponsored by: Create Denver, Sweet Action Ice Cream, Fashion Denver, Fancy Tiger, Denver Handmade Alliance, Denver Handmade Homemade, Access Printing.

Cookies from WaterCourse Bakery and Santa Fe Cookie Company.

Maggie Burns: Making waves on the red carpet and now the big screen!

I have been exceptionally eager to meet Maggie Burns for quite some time now, so when Brandi and I made a quick trip to her Bridal Studio, let’s just say I was beyond excited.

Marie-MargotMaggie Burns is the owner and designer of Marie-Margot located in Denver, Colorado.

Marie-Margot-Couture-Oscars 1
Erin Breeze at the 2012 Oscars in a Marie-Margot gown. Her husband, Daniel Junge, won the Oscar for his direction of the Short Documentary, “Saving Face”.

Her designs have been seen on the runway, on fashion shoots, and have graced the red carpet at the Academy Awards.  Maggie Burns was named the Rising Star in the Bridal Category from Fashion Group International of Denver back in 2011, and has now added yet another notable accolade to her already impressive résumé. This summer she was contacted to make costumes for the upcoming film “Dear Eleanor,” starring Jessica Alba, Luke Wilson and Josh Lucas.  The film was being shot at the Jester Theatre in Boulder, CO and at the Paramount Theatre here in Denver.  The movie follows the story of two teenage girls (Liana Liberato and Hunger Games’ Isabelle Fuhrman) traveling across the U.S. in 1962, during the chaos of the Cuban missile crisis, in search of Eleanor Roosevelt.  The movie is set to hit theaters in 2014.

Maggie Burns is a local celebrity here in Denver, yet she remains incredibly kind-hearted and humble. We had the best time hanging out with Maggie and can’t wait to catch this film and brag about how we know the costume designer for it.

IMG_7423Maggie Burns is breaking out of her typical realm and is designing an entirely unique line with Anna Festa for Red Ball on December 1, 2013. Her collection with Anna Desta will be super edgy and it absolutely can’t be missed (trust us!).

Oh, and Maggie Burns is helping add a little pizzazz to the outfit Brandi will be rocking at Red Ball in December! We love Maggie Burns!

Fashion Denver Style Files! Alexandra Hilker

We ran into Alexndra Hilker PR gal at Neiman Marcus at an event at Neiman’s and right away we knew we wanted to interview her and get more of a sense of her style and background!

-Introduce yourself:
PR gal, animal lover, mountain adventurer. I got into fashion following my college graduation by moving to Paris, where I worked in trend forecasting and editorial. After two years abroad, I began to miss this great state and made the move back to Denver. I love this town and all it has to offer. It’s an exciting time to be living in such an ever-changing city, and I am eager to see what the future holds for fashion and culture in the Mile High.

-How would you describe your personal style?
Comfort comes first. Gravitating towards anything oversized or asymmetrical. I love adding edgy or boyish touches to feminine looks.

-Where are you on at 2pm on a Tuesday?
Up to my knees in bills and our PR budget! Otherwise I’m pulling looks for shoots or working on inspiration for our next event.

-What is your favorite item of clothing in your closet?
Tied between – a vintage YSL cropped tuxedo jacket with crystal buttons and a blue velvet patterned pair of bell bottoms (the latter gets more wear).

-We are having the best time dressing for fall; what is your favorite season to dress for?
I will agree with you there, Fall and Winter are my favorite seasons for dressing. The aspect of layering makes a look so much more interesting. Dark colors and rich tones, unique textures, chunky knits, comfortable boots, and lots of hats in every variety – Fall!

-If you had a theme song, what would it be?
Dreams by Fleetwood Mac. It never will get old.

-You provide major fashion inspiration for us; who is your fashion inspiration?
Books, everyday streetwear, and of course blogs are always great outlets for inspiration. I really enjoy Hilda from Freshnet, Style By Kling, Trine’s Wardrobe, Adenorah, afterDRK and many more. Unexpected styling is always so cool and imaginative.

-I never leave my house without:
Water, iPad, good tunes, flats or converse for tired feet, lip balm, iPad, a woodsy fragrance, and Carbs!
