Interview with Miceala Giulianelli

“Notice what you like and what you dislike to start developing your style…You can always acquire skills such as sewing later, it is not important, the most important thing is to find your style.” – Miceala Giulianelli

By Maya Fuentes

Inspired by nature around her, Miceala Giulianelli created a collection of chic and contemporary designs that were shown as a part of Modello Nuovo’s first semi annual fashion show. Giulianelli enjoys giving a new perspective to classic shapes by reimagining them with modern fabrics like leather, offering her audience designs they are sure to remember. She defines her style as unique, modern, and eye-catching, traits that are obvious to those captivated by Giulianelli’s designs on the runway. While she hopes everyone is inspired by her designs, Giulianelli explains, “My target audience is women who want to feel powerful and confident in what they wear.”

At just 17, her personal style follows normal teen trends varying heavily from what she creates. Giulianelli envisions her contemporary and sophisticated pieces being worn at the office or as a statement for a special occasion.

A word of advice she’d give to other teens looking to start designing at her age, “Notice what you like and what you dislike to start developing your style…You can always acquire skills such as sewing later, it is not important, the most important thing is to find your style.”

What was your main inspiration for these pieces?

My inspiration for those pieces were nature in general. I like to walk in nature when I am designing. One of them is inspired by a waterfall , while another one was inspired by monarch butterflies.

What emotions do you hope your audience felt while viewing the show?

I hope my audience felt inspired by my designs while watching the show. I also hope they felt captivated by the designs.

How were you able to play with various textures, colors, shapes, ect.?

I love playing with classic shapes, but mixing them with modern fabrics, such as leather, to give a sense of modern uniqueness to my designs.

MicaelaWhat three words would you use to describe your style?

I would describe my designs as unique, modern, and eye-catching.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years I see myself selling my designs.

Who is your target audience for what you design?

My target audience is women who want to feel powerful and confident in what they wear. My designs are ready-to-wear and I see a lot of them as being a unique piece to wear to the office or a head turning piece to wear to events.

How does your personal style vary or relate to what you create?

My personal style is very different from what I create as I am seventeen, so I personally wear clothes that follow teenage trends, but what I create is very mature and classic.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to start designing at your age?

My advice to people who would like to start designing at my age would be to find your style first. Notice what you like and what you dislike to start developing your style, then really fine tune it until you can see someone feeling really confident in what you design. You can always acquire skills such as sewing later, it is not important, the most important thing is to find your style.

If you could have dinner with anyone, living, dead, fictional, or real, who would you invite?

If I could have dinner with anyone it would be Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He has always been an inspiration to me because he is curly himself in the way that he has not let fame, money or anyone change his personality because he stays true to his beliefs. He is also so humble even though he is idolized by many.
