REYCLED RUNWAY™ GEARS UP FOR ITS 9TH YEAR OF STUNNING DESIGN

REYCLED RUNWAY™ GEARS UP FOR ITS 9TH YEAR OF STUNNING DESIGN

Last April, a young woman strutted down a runway in the Boulder Theater dressed in a dark fringed skirt and jacket combo. As she gracefully raised her arms to let the long fringe dance and dangle, an already animated crowd went wild and she flashed a couple of peace signs into the crowd at the sold-out theater. When she tossed her “bouquet” into the audience, screams of delight escaped everyone’s mouths.  No, this wasn’t just another teenage fashion show highlighting the latest in prom and club attire, this was Recycled Runway™, a design competition for Middle and High School students who create high fashion garments entirely out of found and recycled materials. The fringed outfit? Made of old bicycle tire tubes and discarded chocolate wrappers. The white gown? Tossed out tissue paper from Vans’ shoe boxes.

With my mom’s help, I put together all of my formal dance dresses, made most of my every day clothes, and even did 2 runway shows in the HS talent show. I have costumed many people since, designed logos for band shirts and fliers, and made many circus freaks’ stage costumes. Born Ugli fashion is an attempt to pull beauty out of overlooked places and dress in an “out of the ordinary” manner. My friend once told me to “be worth looking at”, so when planning costumes, I want them to look like royalty…keeping in mind that the circus … Read more!
