Every once in a while something comes across my Instagram feed that not only inspires me and entertains me but also has me thinking how talented people are with their words, opinions, and way that they can so seamlessly put together an insta story that captivates the reader / viewer!
This is how I felt when Mackenzie Roseland’s Insta Story on The Met Ball came across my feed. Her passion for fashion clearly comes across with entertaining commentary that makes me laugh. I seriously could see Mackenzie with her own little show on fashion and culture! Be sure to follow Mackenzie on Insta. For anyone who is involved or remotely interested in the fashion industry at large, the “First Monday in May” is practically a national holiday. The Met Ball, or more formally known as the Costume Institute Gala, is an annual fundraising event to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s Costume Institute and marks the opening of their annual fashion exhibit. The exhibition is curated with a specific theme in mind, and guests are encouraged to dress in accordance with this theme.
According to the Exhibition Overview,“The Costume Institute’s spring 2019 exhibition will explore the origins of camp’s exuberant aesthetic. provides the framework for the exhibition, which examines how the elements of irony, humor, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality, and exaggeration are expressed in fashion.
We each have our own idea of what camp is, and the essay is encompassing enough to warrant that thought. From Tiffany lamps, to the roaring twenties, dandy, and drag queens.
The Met Ball has had some really good themes over the last decade, but this one seemed to be primed for celebration. Camp is fun! Flirty! Flamboyant! What could go wrong? I appreciate those celebrities, designers, and stylists who really go full-throttle into their preparation. After all, this is a night dedicated to fashion for fashion’s sake as my friend put it. After all, if you’re going to spend $30,000 for a ticket you should probably make the most of it! When else do you get the opportunity to wear something so specifically extravagant?
But there are always a handful of guests who will dress pretty no matter what. Karlie Kloss, I’m looking at you. Pretty is fine, but pretty is an option at literally every other major red carpet event. And fine, some of these attendees have contracts or sponsorships to abide by, but why not shoot for the moon? Fashion should be anything but boring, especially when Camp is on the menu.
I ran home after happy hour, two beers deep with the confidence of my Fashion Merchandising degree, and gave my Instagram followers likely much more than they bargained for with my succinct takes on last night’s looks:
Guess that means we gotta go watch Oceans 8 if we want to get our Rihanna fix (where were you!?). What did you think of Monday’s looks? I think a lot of people had fun with it, and because I’ve learned to manage my expectations, I can at least say wasn’t as disastrous as 2013’s Punk theme. That threw everyone for a loop! But as always, it’s a blissful escape on a Monday night and I’d love to escape to New York and see the exhibit this summer. A girl can dream!
