Who said that a button-up shirt has to be one solid boring color with a corporate feel? NOT Eugene Rooks, brains behind Smasher Robot.
What inspired your love for fashion and fashion design?
During my freshman year of college, I went with a friend to this awesome vintage store in Seattle. I was amazed by all the cool clothes, especially the 70’s style shirts. I was hooked from that point, hitting up thrift stores looking for vintage duds of the more wild variety. It has morphed as my abilities have grown. Now instead of looking for unique clothing, I mostly just wear what I make.
What is the first thing you ever designed? (Do you have a photo? If so, please include it!)
The first thing I ever designed was a Squirrel mascot style costume. While living in Missoula, Montana during college, I borrowed a friend’s sewing machine and just went for it. I had no experience with patterns, I just started cutting out fabric and stitching. My friends were impressed and told me I should go into costume design.
How long have you been designing?
I’ve been a tailor for the last 12, and sewing for 15 years. As far as designing my wears, probably about five years.
Did you go to school for design or are you self taught?
I couldn’t say yes to either of those options, I have had a unique career path. I took a year of Costume Design while attending the University of Montana. I left college early and headed to Denver after my son was born where I worked as an alterations tailor apprentice for three years. From that experience, I was able to become a full-time tailor.
I’ve learned a great deal taking garments apart and putting them back together. I have also learned a lot from the sewing community I have been a part of here in Denver, including co-workers, mentors and my students from my time teaching at Emily Griffith Technical College in the Professional Sewing program.
My experience learning from local master tailors provided me with the skills to make whatever I wanted. Once I learned the fundamentals of garment construction it came down to whatever I could imagine making.
Who is/are your biggest inspiration/s? (Family, Friends, Designers, etc…)
I’m always inspired by musicians and the theatrics of a great stage show. I would say the Flaming Lips have been a foundation, but I have also been influenced by smaller acts who appreciate a visual component to their performance. A lot of the time I’m thinking what would I wear to an upcoming show, or while there I get little visions of ways I could take my garments in a new direction.
What message or story do you aim for your clothes to tell?
I’d like to think my clothes are conversation starters. As an introvert myself, I’ve always used my style as a way to stand out and say “I’m fun, I don’t take myself too seriously, and I’m here for a good time.” I hope that my clothes provide an opportunity for people to connect, a way to open up a conversation.
What is your go-to textile?
Cotton batiks and prints are my go-to textile. They’re easy to work with and care for and come in limitless options.
What was the inspiration behind your latest collection?
Depends on the day really, I’m either trying to take it beyond what I’ve done prior, or going for something simpler. It all starts with the fabric and what jumps out to me. We’ll see what kind of magic transpires.
What does 2020 look like for you in the world of fashion?
I am looking to expand my custom and made-to-order options. I also aim to incorporate more women’s looks into my lineup.
