Sometimes the most powerful stories are the ones that help us understand where we came from… and where we belong.

Adoptee Journeys of Belonging
Motus Theater x CAPU
📍 Posner Center
📅 Sunday, March 29
⏰ 4:00 – 6:00 PM
On Sunday, March 29 from 4–6 PM at the Posner Center, Colorado Asian Pacific United (CAPU) and Motus Theater will present an incredibly moving event: Adoptee Journeys of Belonging, an interactive Playback Theater experience centering Asian adoptee stories across cultures, generations, and identities.

This unique performance invites audience members to share moments of belonging, displacement, identity, and connection. The Motus Playback Theater Ensemble listens deeply to these stories and then brings them to life through improvised theater right on stage.
It’s storytelling in its most human form. No script. Just listening, reflection, and honoring lived experiences.
The result is a powerful evening where stories are witnessed, affirmed, and shared.
Why This Event Means So Much to Me
As many of you know, I was adopted from the Philippines as a toddler, and my adoption story has shaped so much of who I am today.

Growing up in Colorado, my life has been full of love, family, creativity, and community. But like many adoptees, there are also layers to that journey. Questions of identity. Moments of curiosity about roots. And the beautiful realization that belonging can take many forms.
Because of that, being invited to participate in Adoptee Journeys of Belonging is incredibly meaningful to me.

I’ll be sharing one specific and very memorable and special part of my own adoption story during the evening alongside other storytellers, including Jasmine Pyne, whose voice and experiences add another important perspective to the conversation.
Events like this remind us that our stories matter.
And when shared in a space of care and creativity, those stories can help others feel seen too.

What to Expect
This is not a typical theater performance.
Playback Theater is interactive, spontaneous, and deeply human. Audience members can choose to share their own experiences, and the actors will transform those stories into live improvised scenes.
Through movement, emotion, and creativity, each story becomes a moment of reflection and connection for everyone in the room.
You’ll leave with:
✨ A deeper understanding of adoptee experiences
✨ A powerful reminder that belonging can look many different ways
✨ A shared moment of empathy and community
The Power of Story
At Fashion Denver, we talk a lot about identity, expression, and the stories we carry with us. Fashion can tell stories. Art can tell stories. Theater can tell stories.
But the most powerful stories are always the human ones.
I would love to see some familiar faces there as we gather, listen, and celebrate the many paths that lead us to belonging.
With love,
Brandi McMichael
