Denver Fashion Week is here and we’re getting the scoop on a few of the designers that are showcasing!
With a legacy spanning decades in the fashion industry, Mona Lucero has become a revered figure in Denver’s design scene, and is a local staple. Known for her visionary creativity and unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries, Mona has continually inspired and delighted fashion enthusiasts with her unique aesthetic.
As longtime admirers of her work, we can’t wait to see the unveiling of Mona’s latest collection on the runway of Society Night at Denver Fashion Week.
What was the main inspiration behind your latest collection you are showcasing at Denver Fashion Week SOCIETY NIGHT?
There are a few themes – the butterfly which we often think of as pretty and sweet but there is a complexity to the butterfly in darker and more vivid colors that intrigue me. There is a resilience in the butterfly that’s often surprising. There’s also the theme of inner strength, relying on oneself to overcome and personal responsibility. I want to represent these ideas in this new collection.
Your designs often blend various styles and influences. How do you strike a balance between maintaining your signature aesthetic and pushing the boundaries to keep your collections fresh and innovative?
I often return to the same themes but try to present them differently. I do love to surprise my patrons and the viewers and try to think outside of what I’ve done. This season, I’ve been challenging myself to go outside of my boundaries, with new techniques, shapes and fabrics.
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the fashion industry. How do you integrate eco-friendly practices into your design process, and what steps have you taken to minimize the environmental impact of your latest collection?
As an artist and fashion designer, I use a variety of materials and remnants from many past projects to create my designs creating very little waste. This is a policy I’ve had for many years – it’s my core belief that there’s no limit to the objects, fabric or materials which can be incorporated to create a beautiful fashion or art piece.
Denver Fashion Week provides a platform to showcase emerging talent alongside established designers. What advice would you give to aspiring designers looking to make their mark in the industry, especially within the vibrant and diverse fashion scene of Colorado?
I would say find the people who really appreciate what you do, who reflect you and support you. Do your best to make them and yourself happy.
