Designer Crystal Sharp : Edgy Victorian Style

I first met Crystal Sharp back in 1999 when she had a little boutique right off of S. Broadway. Her designs were impecable, elegant, and had this really cool vibe of Victorian chic! I’m so excited to have her at our 15th Anniversary celebration!

What inspired your love for fashion and fashion design?

I started sewing doll clothes for my barbie dolls by age 6 and my father got me my first sewing machine when I was 9. We grew up rather poor so I started to sew for the family.

Did you go to school for design or are you self taught?

I don’t have any technical training in fashion. I moved out at 14 and I wanted a degree that would allow me some stability so I went to UCD and studied economics.

Who is/are your biggest inspiration/s? (Family, Friends, Designers, etc…)

The person who all ways was my biggest fan is my mother she loved to sew and would sew for us kids (7 of us) so I guess it runs in the family.

What inspired your love for fashion and fashion design?

What inspired me the most for fashion and fashion design is the idea that I can create something from nothing that people enjoy wearing. I’m also inspired by designers that create pieces that create trends rather than follow them. 2 such designers include Jerry Lorenzo and Daniel Patrick.

What is the first thing you ever designed?

The first thing I designed was a t-shirt that featured a digitally printed design of a woman in a ski mask shushing the viewer. My brand began as street wear and later transitioned to athletic wear.

How long have you been designing?

5 years.

Did you go to school for design or are you self taught?

Self taught.

Who is/are your biggest inspiration/s? (Family, Friends, Designers, etc…)

My family has been my biggest inspiration for their continued support, entrepreneurial drive, and creativity.

What inspired your love for fashion and fashion design?

I’ve known from a very young age I not only loved clothing but I was influenced by everything I saw people wearing. I absolutely love the melting pot of styles you can see when you go just about anywhere. Whether I’m in one of the fashion capitols, or simply walking into a local coffee shop, I’m always fascinated to see what people woke up and decided to wear that day.

I found my place with fashion through sales. After working the retail gig for many years, I knew I needed more and moved on to work for different fashion and consumer brands in B2B, D2C and everything in between. It was through my diverse experience in working with women’s designer, menswear and lifestyle that I grew to love every aspect of fashion.

What inspired your love for fashion and fashion design?

Colors and fun patterns inspire my love for fashion and fashion design! I fell in love with designing fabric in 2012 and haven’t looked back since.

What is the first thing you ever designed?

In high school I bleached a pair of red jeans until they were a beautiful light pink with dark pink splashes, cut them, and turned them into a skirt. I had an old tutu from a ballet performance which I cut the tulle from and sewed onto the bottom of the skirt. I wish I had a photo to share.

How long have you been designing?

I started designing hemp fabric exclusively in 2013. My latest venture in the ready- to-wear world is SpaceJungle, which I started in 2019, and features athletic fabrics. I hope to merge these two passions and incorporate hemp into a collection soon. Read more!
