DESIGNER-A-DAY: Heather Ng

TODAY’S FEATURED DESIGNER-A-DAY

FOR THE FASHION DENVER HOLIDAY MARKET

Name: Heather Ng

Business: BOHEMI

When were you first inspired to design? I’ve always loved fashion, especially couture, I really wanted to make things that were eclectic, unique and well-made, so in 2006 I started to make clothes for a festival in the desert called Burning Man. I loved making clothes so much  I went to patternmaking and design school in San Francisco as well as fashion design school here in Denver. I’ve made clothes for myself and lots of custom pieces. Although I love making clothes, I found fit to be limiting. I decided to change course and in 2011 I signed up for a metalsmithing apprenticeship for a year in Boulder. I thought jewelry design would be a great use of texture, aesthetic and color that I utilized with fashion design. I’ve been in love with making jewelry ever since, and I feel I can reach more people with my perspective through this medium. Plus, you get to hit things with hammers, and that’s just awesome.

What will you be showing at Fashion Denver’s Holiday Market? I’ll be showing a wide array of jewelry from earrings, bangles, necklaces, rings, and cufflinks in 14k gold fill, copper, sterling silver and lots of gemstones. My holiday theme this year is Art Deco.

If you had to pick one piece from your collection that most represents your personality, which would it be? My amethyst drusy heart set in an angel wing, with a quartz rose would be my first choice. It’s eclectic, yet elegant. On the back I put down an excerpt from a Pablo Neruda poem. I like making pieces that have secret little notes, that only the wearer knows is there. A little mystery is a good thing.

Why should people come see you at the Fashion Denver Holiday Market on December 15th? I make new collections every quarter and a lot of what I make is one-of-a-kind, once it’s gone, it’s gone. Giving someone a completely unique gift that only they will have is such a special treat!  Not sure what to get? I carry classic staples (with a twist) that even a persnickety grandma loves. If you’re looking for something special, handmade, and elegant, with a bohemian spirit, you’ll definitely find something from my little shop.

From your collection, what would be the perfect holiday gift? My hammered triangles and hammered teardrop post earrings in 4 different sizes and 2 different metals (gold/silver) are the best gift for xmas. They are all under $35, they are lightweight, and they can easily go from day to night. You just can’t go wrong, and it’s a perfect stocking stuffer.
