“Sometimes all a woman needs is a “statement piece” to pull her look together; so why not throw on a kimono? I founded Ziba Kimonos by Kiana Kouture to fulfill a long time dream to empower women, regardless of skin color or size, to feel fabulous in their clothes!”- Kiana
Who doesn’t love that one perfect piece that can pull together any outfit.. Whether it’s a beautiful cocktail dress, your swimsuit while on vacation, or your favorite jeans and t-shirt, the kimono is a beautiful way to do just that!
We had a chance to get to know the designer behind the kimonos, Colorado resident residing in beautiful Monument, Kiana!
How long have you been a resident of Denver?
I’ve lived in CO for most of my life (almost 46 years). My family moved from Flushing, NY to Colo. Springs shortly after I was born. When my mom was diagnosed with cancer she returned for treatment, and ultimately lost her battle while in N.Y. and is buried there.
I attended CSU Ft. Collins after graduation and have spent the majority of my life in beautiful Colorado. I currently live in Monument and enjoy exploring and shopping in Denver (especially the restaurants)
What inspired you to focus on kimonos?
Having a statement piece can pull a boring outfit together in a snap! I saw a woman wearing a plain black outfit at my favorite restaurant in Las Vegas a couple of years ago, but the kimono she had on over it really pulled her whole look together. I thought to myself “I’d like to create a versatile, affordable piece for women of all colors and sizes to give their outfits life!”
How do you create your prints and bring your designs to life?
I worked with a designer provided to me by my manufacturer in
CA. I told her I wanted to create 3 different designs that can go from daytime to evening and look effortless. I definitely wanted all 3 designs to work w/many body types. It took several months of changing the designs up before I was happy with moving forward with creating a sample.
How would you describe the spirit of Kiana Kouture?
This journey has made me so proud and thankful for the people who have supported this idea that’s finally come to fruition. I wake up every morning hoping to reach at least 1 person who might see my designs and be excited to bring something different into their wardrobe.
How long have you been designing and what was your journey into the design world?
I started this journey about 2 years ago but have always enjoyed shopping for pieces that looked exotic or different, especially while I’m traveling. There are times when I purchase from a local boutique in a small town and when I return home my friends say “where did you get that it’s so cute!”
How has being a mother affected your eye for style?
I definitely want my kids to see that we don’t have to stick to one style or color. Definitely dress for the occasion and try to look your best; because when you feel good on the inside it doesn’t matter what you’re wearing….you’ll look great on the outside! I definitely enjoy my leggings and oversized sweatshirts, but it’s fun to get dressed, throw on a little make-up and conquer the world.
What 3 things would you take if stranded on a deserted island?
- Matches (or a lighter) for fire
- Any flavor club soda
- Flaming hot cheetos (guilty pleasure)
