Mona Lucero and the Inspiring Winds of Change

Mona Lucero and the Inspiring Winds of Change

By Micky

Mona Lucero’s earliest memory was asking for a pair of red patent leather shoes. Years later she is still pursuing color and vibrance through her unique fashion designs. Mona is a local Denver fashion designer who has built her own brand around a prominent guiding principle; change. Mona constantly evolves, experimenting not only with color, but texture and prints to capture the attention of her customers. “Customers are aware of what is happening in the world and they want change. You have to evolve and follow the trends,”  says Mona.

Culture is among one of the ever changing aspects of the modern world , especially in fashion. As observed by the emergence of fashion trends, one day something is in the next day it is out pushing fashion designers, like Mona, to always be aware of fashion trends. When asked what she pulls inspiration from for her designs Mona remarked, “Cultural trends are very important to pull inspiration from.” Mona observes cultural trends in order to morph her brand, “ I pull inspiration by thinking about the world culturally and what my customers are looking for, then I tailor to Read more!

Black Lives Matter in Black and White

Black Lives Matter in Black and White

Written by: Veronica Randolph and Ashlynn Lehmkuhler

Ashlynn’s Perspective

My name is Ashlynn Lehmkuhler and I am a white woman who appreciates and respects black culture. When my friend Veronica Randolph asked me to write an excerpt on my perspective on black lives matter I was thrilled. I love to write and I have been wanting to express my feelings on black lives matter. As a white person, there has always been an unspoken rule, you don’t speak about racism, it’s not your place. It is time for that ideology to end. It’s time to speak up and stand up and beside my black friends and their families who have dealt with this oppression for far too long.

The black lives matter movement has changed dramatically with the events that transpired since George Floyd’s murder. For the first time the country is coming together and joining forces to fight the injustices and oppression our black communities face daily. We have all decided to take this battle into our own hands and demand justice, not only for the black men and women who have been murdered at the hands of cops, but to demand Read more!

From one house to our hearts….

A couple weeks ago, my friend Castle texted me these videos of Ogden (whose 5). My heart melted. I asked Castle’s sister, Kristen if I could please share them as it would bring a lot of joy to so many, especially since our recent fashion camp was postponed.

This here is a family that I have known and adored for years. It all started when I went to school with Erik Johnson at Metro 20+ years ago.  We would skateboard around campus, eat lunch together, and were all around really good friends. That’s also the time that I met Erik’s friend Castle Searcy.  Erik ended up marrying Castle’s sister Kristen and the two of them began to grow their family.

Behind the scenes while that was going on, years ago, I visited Castle when she lived in San Francisco when my band played a show up there, I was involved in fashion shows with Castle and Kristen’s sister, Roxy and geesh louise… so many fun and fashionable events and adventures with this family!

Brandi Shigley and Wendy LittlepageThis is us in 2010. I’m not sure where we were, but we fancy!

Now, on with the program!

A note from Wendy Littlepage, director.

Every museum has to figure out what belongs in its collection. For the Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys, that means reviewing hundreds of toys and dolls a year. We often bring in experts and community members to help us winnow down donations to items that best represent different times, styles, and ideas. We’re excited to work with Brandi Shigley and … Read more!

COVID-19; A threat to the health and economy of our communities.

From our friends over at B.Fresh

COVID-19; A threat to the health and economy of our communities. During these strange times, we must protect ourselves from ourselves. Being the social creatures that we are, this concept of social distancing seems more foreign than bat stew! Yet, it is the harsh reality we are currently faced with. Socially distancing ourselves to dead the spread of this global pandemic known as coronavirus. Of course, it is our civic duty to keep those most at risk, safe.

In order to do so, we must cancel life as we know it! First, we were told no gatherings of large crowds. SXSW; canceled. Denver’s 420 festival; canceled. The NBA, NHL, and NCAA March Madness tournament; canceled! Things already weren’t looking good!

Then they got a whole lot worse. Gatherings of 250 people or more; canceled. Gatherings of 50 people or more; canceled. Then President Trump recommended no gatherings of 10 people or more. Restaurants and bars were ordered to take-out only for 8 weeks, Colorado’s ski resorts ceased operations and Las Vegas… Never thought we’d see the day that Las Vegas closed.

Ok, we just went from unprecedented to weird and strange real quick! So, … Read more!
