Wag On Project: Every animal in a loving home

Let’s learn more from designer Tiffany Tushar, shall we?

What inspired your love for fashion and fashion design?

I’ve known from a very young age I not only loved clothing but I was influenced by everything I saw people wearing. I absolutely love the melting pot of styles you can see when you go just about anywhere. Whether I’m in one of the fashion capitols, or simply walking into a local coffee shop, I’m always fascinated to see what people woke up and decided to wear that day.

I found my place with fashion through sales. After working the retail gig for many years, I knew I needed more and moved on to work for different fashion and consumer brands in B2B, D2C and everything in between. It was through my diverse experience in working with women’s designer, menswear and lifestyle that I grew to love every aspect of fashion.

What inspired your love for fashion and fashion design?

Colors and fun patterns inspire my love for fashion and fashion design! I fell in love with designing fabric in 2012 and haven’t looked back since.

What is the first thing you ever designed?

In high school I bleached a pair of red jeans until they were a beautiful light pink with dark pink splashes, cut them, and turned them into a skirt. I had an old tutu from a ballet performance which I cut the tulle from and sewed onto the bottom of the skirt. I wish I had a photo to share.

How long have you been designing?

I started designing hemp fabric exclusively in 2013. My latest venture in the ready- to-wear world is SpaceJungle, which I started in 2019, and features athletic fabrics. I hope to merge these two passions and incorporate hemp into a collection soon. Read more!

Equillibrium: A sustainable street brand

Deb and her company Equillibrium were one of the very first designers to participate in our very first ever fashion market back in 2004! What an honor to have her at our 15th anniversary and to see where her and her company have gone over the past decade and a half!

What inspired your love for fashion and fashion design?

My gut… always had the feeling of love toward fashion and clothes since a toddler…

What is the first thing you ever designed?

My first ever design was probably a dress in a High School…  no pic.

How long have you been designing?

I feel like I’ve been designing my whole life in a sense… but started Equillbrium and designing under my label since 1998.

Did you go to school for design or are you self taught?

Self taught and later took classes for some advanced sewing and patern drafting to be a better designer.

Who is/are your biggest inspiration/s?

As far as designers go, I’d say my biggest conscious influences have been Ralph Lauren, Betsey Johnson, Vivienne Westwood,  Lee Alexander McQueen (and now Sarah Burton)… ultimately NATURE really inspires me to create with a light footprint Read more!

SMASHERROBOT: Custom, one of a kind shirts

Who said that a button-up shirt has to be one solid boring color with a corporate feel? NOT Eugene Rooks, brains behind Smasher Robot.

What inspired your love for fashion and fashion design?

During my freshman year of college, I went with a friend to this awesome vintage store in Seattle. I was amazed by all the cool clothes, especially the 70’s style shirts. I was hooked from that point, hitting up thrift stores looking for vintage duds of the more wild variety. It has morphed as my abilities have grown. Now instead of looking for unique clothing, I mostly just wear what I make.

What is the first thing you ever designed? (Do you have a photo? If so, please include it!)

The first thing I ever designed was a Squirrel mascot style costume. While living in Missoula, Montana during college, I borrowed a friend’s sewing machine and just went for it. I had no experience with patterns, I just started cutting out fabric and stitching. My friends were impressed and told me I should go into costume design.

How long have you been designing?

I’ve been a tailor for the last 12, and sewing for 15 years.  As … Read more!
