Style Has No Expiration Date: Interview with Brooks Luby

Brooks Luby Celebrates Aging, Artistry, and the Freedom to Dress on Your Own Terms

Who says great style belongs only to the young?

At Fashion Denver, we believe creativity, confidence, and personal style only become more interesting with time. That’s why we’re thrilled to spotlight Brooks Luby, a designer with more than 50 years of experience in the fashion industry who continues to prove that style truly has no expiration date.

On October 29, 2026, Brooks will bring her creative vision to the runway as the exclusive designer for the Mayor’s Commission on Aging Fashion Show, celebrating aging with strength, beauty, and individuality.

A two-time breast cancer survivor, lifelong artist, and passionate advocate for slow fashion, Brooks is using this opportunity to remind us that growing older doesn’t mean becoming invisible. In fact, it can mean becoming more authentically ourselves.

Aging Boldly, Dressing Beautifully

For Brooks, fashion is about much more than what we put on our bodies. It’s about how we show up in the world.

“This opportunity allows me to express, to the audience and beyond, how aging doesn’t mean becoming invisible.”

Her personal journey has shaped her approach to both life and design. Having survived breast cancer twice, Brooks understands that strength and beauty are shaped by the experiences we carry.

She believes that when we feel beautiful, that confidence radiates outward, changing the way we move, interact, and connect with others.

And perhaps that’s one of the greatest gifts of getting older: the freedom to stop dressing for everyone else and start dressing for ourselves.

Breaking the Rules of Age-Appropriate Fashion

Let’s talk about those pesky fashion rules!

Who decided that women of a certain age shouldn’t show their arms, wear shorter skirts, or experiment with bold silhouettes?

Certainly not Brooks!

“As we age, we come to know what works for our bodies, our minds, and our souls. We are no longer dictated by trends and rules. We choose our own path.”

Her philosophy encourages women to embrace what they love while finding creative ways to feel comfortable and confident. Whether it’s incorporating sheer fabrics, playing with accessories, or experimenting with proportions, fashion should be about possibilities rather than limitations.

Her advice?

“Be yourself. Make your own rules. Listen to your intuition and your gut.”

We couldn’t agree more!

Slow Fashion, Beautiful Stories

Beyond celebrating aging, Brooks is also embracing a thoughtful approach to creating clothing.

Her newest Slow Fashion collection blends vintage and modern textiles, traditional craftsmanship, and innovative Japanese draping techniques.

Inspired by a course in Japanese draping and a renewed appreciation for handmade artistry, she has adopted a philosophy that beautifully captures her approach:

“Craft is design.”

Each piece celebrates the human hand through thoughtful stitching, unusual techniques, and a commitment to transforming existing materials into something extraordinary.

Imagine a vintage tablecloth, once part of family gatherings and cherished memories, finding new life as a luxurious, one-of-a-kind garment.

That’s the magic of Brooks Luby.

By repurposing textiles and incorporating sustainable fabrics, she creates pieces that honor the past while offering something fresh and unexpected for the future.

It’s fashion with history, heart, and purpose.

More Than a Fashion Show

The October 29 Mayor’s Commission on Aging Fashion Show is more than a runway presentation. It’s an opportunity to challenge perceptions about growing older and celebrate the beauty of every chapter of life.

Through her collection, Brooks hopes audiences will recognize that aging isn’t about fading into the background. It’s about becoming more fully ourselves.

After five decades in fashion, she has discovered that the women drawn to her designs aren’t necessarily chasing the latest trends.

They’re searching for pieces that reflect who they are and who they’re still becoming.

When asked to finish the sentence, “Style has no expiration date because…”, Brooks answered beautifully:

“Style has no expiration date because it’s timeless, artful, and wearable. It evolves with every generation, proving that great style has no age.”

At Fashion Denver, we’re celebrating that message wholeheartedly!

Here’s to bold choices, beautiful craftsmanship, second acts, and the fabulous freedom to wear whatever makes you feel most like YOU.

Because great style doesn’t retire. It evolves.
