BOULDER, COLORADO Every Spring, for the past ten years, young designers from around the Denver Metro Area have worked tirelessly to create stunning couture for the Trash the Runway® (TTR) fashion show and competition. There is always a range of fashion from sweeping evening gowns to whimsical leisure attire. The presentation is stunning, the young designers who attend local middle and high schools are poised perfection, and the designs themselves are made entirely of recycled and found materials. Evening gowns have been made from materials like old trampoline mats and pantsuits from discarded exercise bands. One winning garment from last year’s competition was painstakingly made from thousands of gum wrappers.

The 11th annual TTR show was scheduled to happen on March 17, 2020 at Macky Auditorium on the University of Colorado campus in Boulder, Colorado. Over 1,000 tickets had been sold and the excitement was percolating, … Read more!

Denver, CO – July 5th, 2023 – Meow Wolf Denver is thrilled to announce its very first trash fashion show, where innovation and sustainability collide in a dazzling display of avant-garde looks. This trashtastic event will feature 20 local designers unveiling their mind-boggling, recycled and upcycled creations on the runway. Get ready to be blown away by the transformation from refuse to remarkable; the trashier the better!

While the fashion industry is vital to American culture and self expression, the impact to the environment is hard to ignore. The U.S. Geological Survey found that 71% of microplastics found in samples of river water came from fibers. Scientists estimate that, globally, 35% of the microplastics found in oceans can be traced to textiles, making them the largest source of microplastic pollution in the world’s oceans. (Bloomberg)

Meow Wolf is committed to sustainability and as such, many of the costumes designed by Wardrobe Coordinator Kate Major are reused, upcycled, and recreated from unwanted materials–as was the case for her look presented at the Spring ‘23 Paper Fashion Show.

“There is so much inspiration in trash!” said Kate Major, Read more!

REYCLED RUNWAY™ GEARS UP FOR ITS 9TH YEAR OF STUNNING DESIGN

REYCLED RUNWAY™ GEARS UP FOR ITS 9TH YEAR OF STUNNING DESIGN

Anticipating the 9th year of Recycled Runway, a Boulder-based design competition that features local, young designers who create haute couture out of found and recycled materials.

Last April, a young woman strutted down a runway in the Boulder Theater dressed in a dark fringed skirt and jacket combo. As she gracefully raised her arms to let the long fringe dance and dangle, an already animated crowd went wild and she flashed a couple of peace signs into the crowd at the sold-out theater. Shortly thereafter, another young woman glided down the same runway in an ethereal white gown, the skirt covered in delicate rosettes. When she tossed her “bouquet” into the audience, screams of delight escaped everyone’s mouths.  No, this wasn’t just another teenage fashion show highlighting the latest in prom and club attire, this was Recycled Runway™, a design competition for Middle and High School students who create high fashion garments entirely out of found and recycled materials. The fringed outfit? Made of old bicycle tire tubes and discarded chocolate wrappers. The white gown? Tossed out tissue paper from Vans’ shoe boxes.

Denver’s mini Project Runway: A blast from the past

Tonight I was watching Project Runway All Stars featuring Denver’s Mondo Guerra and it brought me back a few years. In 2007, I was one of the producers on The Fashion Project at Tamarac. Designers competed head to head to win a trip to NYC. Mondo won the competition. In this excerpt, designers had $100.00 to spend at Ace Hardware and made a dress. In Project Runway All Stars, Mondo chose binders, trashbags and tape. In our Ace competition, he used garbage bags, gumballs, and chicken wire. This video brings back memories. Filmed by 2 of my favorite film makers Mas Hacienda and Ben Kronberg and featuring several of Denver’s amazing designers…

Watch the 1st episode of Project Runway All Stars and follow the excitement! You can also watch live at The Beauty Bar every Thursday evening. We are so proud of Mondo and our other past Colorado contestants on Project Runway; Fallene Wells, Julie Tierney, and Gretchen Jones!… Read more!
