Denver, CO – July 5th, 2023 – Meow Wolf Denver is thrilled to announce its very first trash fashion show, where innovation and sustainability collide in a dazzling display of avant-garde looks. This trashtastic event will feature 20 local designers unveiling their mind-boggling, recycled and upcycled creations on the runway. Get ready to be blown away by the transformation from refuse to remarkable; the trashier the better!
While the fashion industry is vital to American culture and self expression, the impact to the environment is hard to ignore. The U.S. Geological Survey found that 71% of microplastics found in samples of river water came from fibers. Scientists estimate that, globally, 35% of the microplastics found in oceans can be traced to textiles, making them the largest source of microplastic pollution in the world’s oceans. (Bloomberg)
Meow Wolf is committed to sustainability and as such, many of the costumes designed by Wardrobe Coordinator Kate Major are reused, upcycled, and recreated from unwanted materials–as was the case for her look presented at the Spring ‘23 Paper Fashion Show.
“There is so much inspiration in trash!” said Kate Major, Wardrobe Coordinator and Creature Designer at Meow Wolf Denver. “And it feels really good to know that you gave a new glamorous life to materials that would have ended up in a landfill.”
Trash also plays an integral role in one of the worlds of Convergence Station, C Street: the alien cityscape with a cyberpunk aesthetic used to be the sanitation district on its home planet of Immensity. As such, guests can spot a trash-chic aesthetic throughout the world, ultimately leading to the motherlode of all rubbish art: Gremlin Symphony, an entire room-sized musical instrument made from local trash that plays majestically on its own.
Meow Wolf’s trashion show extravaganza will take place on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, in The Perplexiplex venue at Convergence Station, Meow Wolf’s Denver location. The renowned immersive art experience will serve as the perfect backdrop for this boundary-pushing fashion event, where sustainability is key and creativity knows no bounds.
Fashion enthusiasts, art aficionados, and anyone with a taste for the extraordinary are invited to witness this collision of art, fashion, and sustainability. Prepare to be amazed as trash transcends its humble origins and transforms into awe-inspiring ensembles that challenge conventional perceptions.
